This increased the power obtained from this engine in turbocharged form due to the very late almost TDC firing of the spark. 500 HP was easily attained with excellent BSFC. With the late spark the exhaust temperature was still low and the engine bearing wear negligible. This meant many races between overhauls.
These mono barrels are vertically and horizontally drilled for cooling and have been tested to 700HP in a 2000cc turbo engine. Initially cooling fins were machined for extra heat transfer but this was found to be unnecessary.
Even in a normally aspirated engine configuration these barrels proved to be an improvement in ring sealing and headgasket failure. The whole engine block becomes stronger and block flex is reduced which means less crankshaft friction. To rebuild your engine is simplified as you can "bore oversize".
